Prefabricated Pool Guide: Panel, Fiber and Polyester
Prefabricated pool systems fall into three main groups: panel, fiberglass and polyester. This guide details the installation process, advantages and limits of each prefabricated pool system for you.
Prefabricated pool systems fall into three main groups: panel, fiberglass and polyester. This guide details the installation process, advantages and limits of each prefabricated pool system for you.
Prefabricated Pool is the general name given to a pool system whose body is largely produced in a factory environment or quickly assembled in the field from standard modules. The aim is to shorten construction time on site and ensure production quality in a controlled environment.
In practice, three main systems stand out: panel pools where steel or composite panels are assembled on site, fiberglass pools made from a single piece mold, and glass fiber reinforced polyester body systems. In the projects we have been carrying out since 1993, we have been applying these three systems where the ground, purpose of use and budget require it.
In panel pools, galvanized steel or composite panels are combined with bolted connections on the prepared ground to form the carrier body of the pool. The inner surface of the panels is usually waterproofed with a membrane liner.
This system is preferred because it provides flexibility in projects with variable geometry and medium-large sized pools. The installation is significantly shorter than in classical reinforced concrete casting; However, ground preparation and static terracing still require professional engineering.
Fiberglass pools are ready-made bodies that are molded in one piece at the factory; It is lowered to the field by crane and placed in the prepared pit. Since the surfaces are finished with gelcoat at the factory, there is often no need for a separate coating layer.
Glass fiber reinforced polyester systems come from a similar material family, but offer solutions that can be completed by modular or field lamination. Both approaches have the advantage of being lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and with a smooth interior surface; The choice is made based on the size of the pool and shipping conditions.
The most obvious advantage is speed: thanks to the factory-built body, field time is reduced and the project schedule becomes predictable. The controlled production environment ensures a repeatable standard in surface quality and water resistance.
In addition, smooth inner surfaces reduce bacterial adhesion and make cleaning easier. The lightweight body creates a static advantage in certain parcels by reducing the ground bearing load.
The biggest constraints on factory-made one-piece bodies are size and transportation; The road transport clearance determines the maximum size the pool can reach. In very large or special geometry projects, panel or on-site application systems come into play.
In addition, being prefabricated does not make ground survey and correct drainage unnecessary. An incorrectly prepared floor causes settlement and stress problems even in the best quality body. For detailed comparison with reinforced concrete, you can take a look at our relevant pillar guide.
Regardless of the body type, filtration, circulation and automation equipment determine the performance of the pool. In our projects, we size the filter, pump and dosing systems of well-established manufacturers such as Astral according to the volume and intensity of use of the pool.
Skimmer or overflow system selection, lighting, heating and dosing should be planned at the project stage. When you combine the speed of a prefabricated body with a properly sized mechanical room, you get a long-lasting and low-maintenance pool.

Book a free site surveyWarranty coverage for prefabricated bodies varies depending on the manufacturer's body structure and coating layer; Therefore, we recommend that you clarify the warranty terms at the contract stage. Access to spare parts and service for mechanical equipment such as filters, pumps and dosing is as important as the body. One of the reasons why we prefer equipment from well-established manufacturers such as Astral is long-term parts availability.

In light-bodied prefabricated pools, high ground water can create buoyancy that can dislodge the body; For this reason, drainage and, when necessary, water discharge wells are planned from the beginning in the project. In areas where frost is intense, ground preparation and filling material selection become especially important. Ground survey is essential for the correct evaluation of these conditions.

The membrane liner has a certain service life depending on the intensity of use, the balance of water chemistry and mechanical stress. Unbalanced pH and high chlorine are the main factors that shorten the life of the liner. When replacement is required, this process is relatively easy as it can be done while preserving the panel body; We need to evaluate your usage profile together for the exact period.

Yes, prefabricated housings are compatible with heating solutions such as heat pumps or heat exchangers; The important thing is that heating is foreseen from the beginning in the mechanical room design. When heating is added later, additional adjustments to the plumbing and electrical infrastructure may be required. Therefore, we recommend that you share your heating intention at the project stage.

Gelcoat surface provides a smooth and hygienic interior surface; However, over the years, changes in color and brightness may occur due to water chemistry and UV effects. Balanced water chemistry and regular maintenance preserve the appearance of the gelcoat for a noticeably longer time. Gelcoat surfaces can be repaired and renewed when necessary.

Although one-piece fiberglass hulls can technically be disassembled and transported, this is an extensive operation requiring plumbing, ground and cranes and is often uneconomical. Panel systems, on the other hand, are relatively more suitable for disassembly and reinstallation. If you have the possibility of relocating, it would be useful to discuss this from the beginning when choosing the system.
